Was Notting Hill Always Romantic? A London Couples Photographer's Take

Was Notting Hill always romantic, or was it Julia Roberts saying "I'm just a girl" that made it so? The chicken or the egg. I'm not sure anyone can answer that anymore.
What I do know is that it's home to one of the most iconic sequences in cinema history. Hugh Grant, walking through Portobello Market as the seasons change around him. Heartbroken. Moving through the world without his love while the world refuses to slow down for him. No matter how many times I know it's coming, no matter how many times I hear "Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers, I feel it. That quiet twang of compassion for a person stuck in place while everything else keeps spinning. Because that's the thing about heartbreak: the world doesn't pause for it. It just keeps going, and you have to find your way back into it eventually.
Spoiler alert: he does. They get their happily ever after.
And I think that's why people still line up to see the blue door twenty-six years later. It's not really about the door. It's about what the door represents: the possibility that things work out. That hope isn't naive. That if you just keep walking through the market while the seasons change, something beautiful is waiting on the other side. We are all, at the end of the day, just trying to believe in a happy ending. That instinct to seek out hope is maybe the most human thing about us.
I don't seek out the blue door anymore. But the neighborhood still does something to me every time.
Wandering the blooming streets past the pastel houses, I feel my creative instincts wake up in a way they don't always elsewhere. There is something about being in a place you love that unlocks a version of yourself that's harder to access at home. Notting Hill does that for me. It always has.
This particular afternoon started the right way: a slice and a glass of wine at Ria's, my favorite, before heading to the train station to meet Maddy and Iris. They were no strangers to being in front of a camera. Both studying the arts, both immediately down to explore and figure it out as we went.
We wandered. We stopped in front of beautiful trees. We took a moment on a park bench and let the afternoon breathe. The weather was something London doesn't give you without making you earn it first: sunny. Not just sunny, but one of the first real sunny days of the season. The kind of day the whole city feels. The energy was high and the streets were electric, and there is something about a spring day in London that gives you the same feeling as the ending of a good 90s romance movie. Like maybe everything is going to work out after all.
We made our way slowly down to the market, browsing jewelry and vintage furs, and eventually landed in a coffee shop where caffeine and giggles took over. This was a Notting Hill couples photographers dream day.

I always say you don't need to be comfortable in front of a camera to take a beautiful photograph. The best sessions feel less like photoshoots and more like a fun date I happen to be documenting. But there is something special about artists coming together, seeing the vision, and moving naturally inside it. And even though Maddy and Iris were performers, no one could have performed what I saw between them. The way they laughed. The secret kisses. The way they seemed to forget I was there entirely. I was just a third wheel on the perfect date, and I would not have had it any other way.
So was Notting Hill always romantic? I think yes. I think the movie just gave the rest of the world permission to notice. It launched the neighborhood into a new era in 1999 and the tourism numbers have never come back down, and the blue door went from an ordinary entrance to a pilgrimage site almost overnight. But romance was already in the air there long before Hugh Grant ever walked those streets in slow motion. It usually is in London.
Twenty-six years later, the movie holds up. The neighborhood is as romantic as ever. And if you
ask me, it always was.
